A few months ago I created a blog called Naming the Homeless. My name is Lauren Purnell and I am a journalism major at Rowan University. I’ve paired up with my mom, Kathy Parise, to provide insight into the inner workings of the homeless community.
This blog’s purpose is to provide a place for the voice of the homeless community to be heard. We conducted our first interview on October 7th, 2017 when we hand delivered a care package to a homeless woman named Dora and encouraged her to share her story with us.
After having heard these individual’s voices and their stories I will then transfer their history, thoughts, and feelings into a blog post and publish their story on http://www.namingthehomeless.com. This way the public will have constant access to this information. The mission of this blog is to put an end to the negative connotations that the term “homeless” has acquired over the years and re-humanize the homeless community in the eyes of society, one story at a time.
The first five stories have been posted and I’d really appreciate it if you took some time out of your day to get know Dora, Constance, Chaz, and Jeanette!
We are also always accepting donations! We’re looking for a great array of items: clothing, notebooks, pens, deodorant, jackets, canned goods, packaged foods, bottled waters, shoes, hair brushes, blankets, feminine products, hats, gloves, scarfs, socks, first aid supplies, shampoo, conditioner, wipes, face wash, soap, etc.
We appreciate any and all donations and I can assure you that the less fortunate people we meet in Philadelphia do as well. If are local to Burlington County, NJ and would like to donate items for our care packages we are available for drop off, pick up, or meeting at an agreed upon location.
We have a GoFundMe page for monetary donations, that also benefits the care packages that we offer during interviews, which can be located at: https://www.gofundme.com/namingthehomeless.
